Every day at noon, Captain Smith and some of his officers took a series of measurements to chart the distance they had traveled in the previous 24 hours.
Passengers took a guess and made a wager. Then the Captain and his officers met everyone in the First Class Lounge to give the results of their measurements. The passenger who had picked the figure closest to that day's mileage would collect a nice chunk of money.
There was no formal casino on board. Still, people liked to bet on anything, from card games to how fast the ship was going to how many diamonds were in a lady's tiara.
Games of chance weren't discouraged but they weren't condoned either. Passengers often made bets among themselves, but some took their games so seriously that they lost a small fortune.
