Anthony Abbing, 1870-1912 |
Anthony Abbing was the oldest of six children living in St. Bernard section of Cincinnati, Ohio with his German immigrant parents. His father died when the children were little. His mother, Catharina, worked as a washerwoman until the children were old enough to go to work.
Anthony worked as a blacksmith and at age 38, accepted a contract to work in South Africa for three years. On the return trip home, he sailed on Titanic from Southampton to New York then planned to make connections to Cincinnati.
There was no mention of him in anyone's testimony at the US Senate Inquiry or the British Inquiry. Since most of the Third-Class passengers were locked in steerage to separate them from First and Second Class passengers, it is assumed that he went down with the ship.
His body was never recovered. As an unmarried man, his mother Catharina filed for compensation from the relief funds and to be administrator of his estate. His mother died in 1917.
