Much of James Vivian Drew's early history was entwined with that of his brother William. James emigrated to the USA around 1890 to live near his brother William who had emigrated in 1886.

William, who owned a marble monument business (tombstones) on Long Island New York, married Louisa Jenkins on April 20, 1893; they had a son named William. Louisa died from complications of childbirth. The child, William, died at age 4 on March 13, 1898.

William remarried on June 24, 1903 to Annie Eliza Brines.  On March 30, 1904, William and Annie had a child named Marshall Brines Drew.  Annie died two weeks after giving birth.

When James arrived in the USA in 1890, he began working with William in his monument business.  Around 1901 or 1902, James Drew married Maria Louisa (Lulu) Thorne. It is estimated because the 1900 census shows Lulu was still unmarried.  When five years had gone by, Lulu and James were still childless.

Since widower William was unable to care for baby Marshall and also run his business, William gave Marshall to James and Lulu to raise.

The 1910 census shows Marshall and his father William were living as members of James and Lulu's household. Marshall said years later that he referred to his aunt as Mom.

In the fall of 1911, James, Lulu and 7-year old Marshall traveled to England on the RMS Olympic to spend some time with family.  For the trip home, they booked second-class tickets on RMS Titanic.

On the evening of April 14, 1912, Marshall (now 8 years old) and Lulu were sleeping in their cabin. James was up on deck smoking a cigarette
when Titanic hit an iceberg. He rushed back to the cabin, helped wrap each of them in a blanket and put on lifebelts. He led Lulu and Marshall up on deck to Lifeboat #10, kissed them goodbye and assured them that he would find them later.

However, James Drew died with the other men who stayed behind and his body was never recovered.

Lulu and Marshall were rescued by the Carpathia. Feeling the devastating loss of James, Lulu vowed never to cross the ocean again and she never did.

Marshall's birth father, William Drew, was among those who welcomed home the survivors at the dock in New York. Marshall went to live with William.

After five years, William died in 1917 of tuberculosis.

in 1916, Lulu married Richard Opie (born 1885) who owned a carpentry business.  Lulu and Richard Opie took Marshall to live with them after William's death.  He lived with them until he went out on his own after graduating from art school.

Richard Opie died on February 24, 1970.

Lulu spent her final days in Watch Hill Nursing Home. She died on June 2, 1970 at age 92.

Marshall Drew gave many interviews about his experience on Titanic and befriended many Titanic enthusiasts.  His appearance was rather distinctive in his later years because he had flowing white hair and a rather craggy face.

Marshall Drew became an accomplished artist and an art teacher, teaching at Grover Cleveland High School in Brooklyn New York for 36 years. After he retired, he continued to give art lessons in his home.

Marshall Drew died on June 6, 1986 at the age of 82. His very distinctive tombstone was provided by the Titanic International Society.
